As an official competition Canoe Sprint made its Olympic debut in 1936 in Berlin. Over time, the sport has developed significantly and has been ever since growing in popularity. Overall, Canoe Sprint is dominated by European participants, who win the overwhelming majority of medal events in both Olympic Games and World Championships.
Mingachevir will host the Canoe Sprint competition during the Baku 2015 Games. The fourth biggest city in Azerbaijan, Mingachevir is famous for its water reservoirs and known as the City of Lights. Over three exciting days of competition, from 14–16 June 2015, 350 athletes – 205 men and 145 women will take to the water and attempt to paddle their way to a gold medal. In total, there will be 12 kayak events (men’s and women’s) and three canoe events (men’s only).
